The Roamer is my largest and most versatile ultralight camera bag, designed for photographers who carry additional camera gear on the trail. Whether you’re packing multiple lenses, a backup body, or even a star tracker, the Roamer is built to keep your equipment safe and ready for action—all while staying lightweight.
In contrast to my other bags, the Roamer features 8mm padding for enhanced protection and rigidity. Inside, two velcro-attached padded dividers let you customize the layout to keep everything secure and organized.
Like all my bags, the Roamer uses a roll-top design with taped seams strong weather protection. It also comes with my signature magnetic lid for quick access to your camera: When you’re ready to hike, roll down the lid and the magnets will keep it securely closed. Ready to shoot? Just flip up the lid and grab your camera – you can even swap lenses in seconds!
Attachment Options
My favorite way to carry this ultralight camera bag is attached to the daisy chain on my backpack shoulder straps with two metal carabiners (included). This is surprisingly comfortable and I encourage you to try this! It balances the weight of the backpack really well and keeps your gear always ready at hand. But you can also explore additional carrying methods above, including hip-belt connectors or shoulder sling, plus I’m developing additional options at the time. Thanks to the two full rows of cord loops, you can flexible change, experiment with, and come up with new attachment version yourself.

Equipped with 8 mm padding, my tested sweet spot that provides just the right amount of protection and rigidity for heavier gear.

What this means:
The Rolltop Closure is designed for three rolls and thus forms a strong barrier against water entry. This is superior to camera bags with zippers (even if the zip keeps water out, the zipper seams that can’t really be taped let water in).
The external fabric is fully waterproof. To make the best use of this, I’ve designed my camera bags with as few seams as possible. All external seams are taped to prevent water sneaking through the stitch holes.
Typical camera bags would sew the external fabric and internal liner together to sandwich the padding in-between. I don’t do this, because this makes it impossible to properly tape and seal the camera bag! Instead, I tape my liner to the inside of the shell.
Note: While the rolltop provides excellent protection against rain, it’s not designed for submersion.
The rolltop is designed to be unrolled once you’re ready to hike or get ready to shoot. Then, my magnetic quick-flip system offers both quick access and sufficient protection on the move.
How does it work?
Magnets clip both sides of the rolltop together. When you fold the rolltop down, another magnet holds it securely in place.
To access your camera, simply lift and open the folded-down lid in a single movement.
The Roamer Camera Bag offers additional space for lens(es) and accessories so you can quickly adapt your current setup.
You decide how you carry your camera bag outdoors – thanks to multiple attachment points, two included carabiners and lots of additional attachment options.
Use carabiners or shoulder strap connectors to attach to daisy chain on your backpack shoulder straps
Use hip-belt connectors to attach to the side of your hip-belt. You can feed your hip-belt through the connectors and cinch them tight, or feed the connectors through attachment points on your hip-belt to additionally secure your bag.
A simple shoulder sling or waist belt allows you to carry your camera bag without a backpack. In case of the shoulder sling, I recommend the custom upgrade of extra side attachment points for a more balanced and comfortable carry.
My standard camera bag is designed to be ultralight, protective and quickly accessible – full focus on these features, nothing else. But you can configure your custom bag to add options that make it the perfect camera bag for you!
The bag includes two internal dividers to organize and protect your gear. They attach using velcro-like hook tape on the dividers and a hook-receptive fabric liner inside the bag. The dividers are flexible, allowing you to bend and position them to create customized compartments.

EcoPak EPLX 200 is my standard fabric—eco-friendly, lightweight, and durable. Choose X-Pac RX30 if you’d like more beautiful color options (and don’t mind a little extra weight). For the toughest tear and abrasion resistance at the lowest weight, pick Ultra 100X/200X or 400X with their extra-strong UHMWPE fibers.

Ich habe mir einen Roamer als Custom Einsatz für meinen Kamerarucksack anfertigen lassen. Ungewiss, ob ich eine passende Lösung finden würde, habe ich Jacob kontaktiert. Vom ersten Austausch bis zum Endprodukt in meinen Händen war es eine erfolgreiche und stets konstruktive Reise.
Das Produkt selbst ist unglaublich leicht und dennoch sehr stabil. Der Einsatz passt perfekt in meinen NYA-Evo Fjord 60. Dank dieser Lösung, kann ich in kompakter Weise, meine DSLM, inklusive 24-70 und 70-200 mit auf Reisen nehmen und habe dennoch genügend Platz für andere Utensilien.

Die Tasche wurde nach meinen Maßangaben in kürzester Zeit hergestellt und rechtzeitig vor einer längeren Reise geliefert. Insgesamt bin ich mit der Tasche zufrieden, sehe aber einige Verbesserungspunkte, die ich z.T. bereits selbst vorgenommen habe. Hier meine Einschätzung nach ausgiebigem Einsatz im Überblick:
Positiv:
+ Tasche genau nach Maß (gut 1 cm zusätzlich Spiel wird bei der Herstellung berücksichtigt und ist sinnvoll)
+ handwerklich gut und sauber verarbeitet
+ extrem (!) leicht
+ äußere Hülle schmutzunempfindlich
+ Anbringungsmöglichkeit am Rucksack vor dem Oberkörper mit Hilfe der Verlängerungsriemen toll gelöst. Tasche liegt dabei ausreichend am Körper an.
Verbesserungsfähig:
– beiliegende Polsterungen nur 4 mm statt 8 mm wie angegeben. Daher habe ich die Polster doppelt verwendet und aus meinem Fotorucksack Klettpolster entnommen und ein altes Kniekissen zweckentfremdet, um meine Ausrüstung ausreichend zu schützen.
– die beigefügten gepolsterten Raumteiler haben nur einen sehr schmalen Klettrand zur Befestigung in der Tasche. ein halber cm mehr würde die Befestigung in der Tasche deutlich erleichtern.
– an einem der Klettpolster aus meinem Fotorucksack ist eine Einschubtasche für Speicherkarten oder einen Ersatz-Akku fixiert. Sehr praktisch, damit sich kleine Teile nicht in den Tiefen der Tasche verabschieden (nicht zwingend notwendig, aber in jedem Fall nice-to-have)
– zusätzlich bestellter Tragegurt wirkt nicht besonders robust, Polster ist bei Equipment mit etwas mehr Gewicht auf Dauer zu gering. Ich hatte zum Glück noch einen Trageriemen mit ordentlichem Polster und robusten und drehbaren Karabinern übrig, den ich sofort gegen den gelieferten ausgetauscht habe.
– gerade bei schwererer Ausrüstung wäre es sinnvoll, den Trageriemen für das Tragen über der Schulter nicht allein an den beiden als Extra bestellten Ösen an der Taschenseite einzuhaken. Die Sicherheit würde verbessert, wenn der Trageriemen an der Unterseite komplett durchgeschoben werden könnte.
– die Unterseite der Tasche besitzt leider keinen Schutz gegen Dreck; 4-6 Höcker aus Plastik würden da Abhilfe schaffen.
– die zur Befestigung an der Rückseite beigefügten aufklappbaren Karabiner sind recht filigran und wirken nicht besonders stabil. Einer davon hat sich ohne weiteres Zutun bereits auf dem Hinflug im Gepäckfach des Flugzeuges verabschiedet. Zum Glück hatte ich noch ein paar leichte Alukarabinerhaken dabei. Nachdem meine Ausrüstung gut 3,5 kg auf die Waage bringt, ist mein Zutrauen in die mitgelieferten filigranen Karabiner nur sehr eingeschränkt. Schließlich hängt von deren Stabilität die Sicherheit meines teuren Equipments ab. Also besser stabilere Karabiner aus Aluminium verwenden.
– die Magnete im Rolltop könnten etwas breiter sein (alternativ 2 mehr davon), damit die Tasche unkompliziert schließt, auch wenn man in der Eile die Kanten nicht so ganz perfekt übereinander legt.
Mein Fazit: Die Idee der Tasche ist grundsätzlich wirklich genial, insbesondere mit der Möglichkeit der Befestigung an einem klassischen Rucksack. Das Produkt passt auf alle Fälle für leichtes Fotoequipment wie eine APS-C- oder MFT-Kamera mit entsprechenden Objektiven. Bei einer Vollformatkamera mit 2-3 Objektiven braucht es m.E. eher eine “heavy duty”-Version. Dies bedeutet natürlich höhere Materialkosten und Herstellungsaufwand, die sich im Preis niederschlagen dürften. Möglicherweise gibt das der Markt aber nur bedingt her.
I love the color called Alpen Glow, the material and the quality of the processing. One of the most important issues to me was the individual design with a perfect fit to the gear of my upcoming adventure. I need to have a Nikon Z7 with a 24-120mm, a GoPro, two filters and batteries in front of my touring backpack. So I went for the Roamer. The planning with and contact to Jacob was amazing!
