Built for carrying more.

The Roamer is my most versatile camera bag, designed for photographers who carry additional gear on trail. 8 mm padding gives it the protection to take a knock, and two hook-and-loop dividers let you split the inside however your kit demands. The dividers are removable and can fold sideways in the center.

Don't fear the rain.

The shell is waterproof and has fully taped seams, while the rolltop seals tightly against the rain with three rolls. You will feel the bag bulge like a balloon – what keeps air in, keeps water out.

Always ready to shoot.

Unroll the lid once at the start of your hike. Let the magnets snap in place, closing your bag. When the light is good, flip up the lid, maybe swap a lens, and take that shot.

On a daisy chain or hip belt.

My favorite way to carry the Roamer is clipped to a backpack's shoulder-strap daisy chain with two carabiners – surprisingly comfortable. The two rows of cord loops also let you mount it on a hip belt, carry it as a sling, or come up with your own solution.

Specs & details

Tiny details make the difference.

Sizing

The Roamer is built around a rectangular protective foam box with two hook-and-loop padded dividers inside, so you can split the space for a body and multiple lenses (or other gear). Standard sizes are designed so a camera at the max dimensions below will slide in and out smoothly.

  • SmallInternal size23.5 × 18 × 9.5 cm (W × H × D)

What fits?Arrange your gear on a table like you would pack it inside the bag. Measure width, height and depth. Add 0.5 cm in width for each divider you plan to use.

  • LargeInternal size25 × 20 × 11 cm (W × H × D)

What fits?Arrange your gear on a table like you would pack it inside the bag. Measure width, height and depth. Add 0.5 cm in width for each divider you plan to use.

  • CustomInternal sizeYour exact dimensions

What fits?Arrange your gear on a table like you would pack it inside the bag. Measure width, height and depth. Add 0.5 cm in width for each divider you plan to use.

Measure your actual camera and lens before ordering. Manufacturer dimensions often understate the real width (strap lugs are commonly excluded), and body + lens lengths don’t always add up to the true combined length.

X-Pac RX30217 g248 g

Weighed without carabiners. Each bag is made by hand, so weights vary by a few grams. Recent construction changes (improved strength and waterproofing) may add 5–10 g per bag over the figures above.

Ultralight Materials
  • Shell

Your choice of Ecopak EPLX 200 (eco-friendly and my standard) or X-Pac RX30 (adds a color range at a weight increase). For the lightest and strongest possible builds, pick my premium ultralight fabrics: Ultra 100X, Ultra 200X, or Ultra 400X.

  • Padding

8 mm Evazote EV50 closed-cell foam is my recommended default for the Roamer – more rigidity, more protection for longer lenses and mountain use. 4 mm is available if you want to go lighter.

  • Liner

Dyneema Composite Fabric CT2K.18, 34 gsm, on bottom and sides. Colors may vary depending on availability – white, black, or red. Black hook-and-loop fabric on front and back to attach the dividers.

Waterproofing
  • Rolltop Closure

Designed for three rolls and thus forms a strong barrier against water entry. This is superior to camera bags with zippers (even if the zip keeps water out, the zipper seams that can’t really be taped let water in). Note: While the rolltop provides excellent protection against rain, it’s not designed for submersion.

  • Limited Seams

The shell fabric is fully waterproof. To make the best use of this, I construct the shell with as few seams as possible and tape all seams. Unlike other camera bags, I also don’t sew in the padded foam box. Instead, I tape it inside to avoid additional stitch holes going through all layers that would be impossible to tape.

This makes these bags as waterproof as possible without much heavier fabrics and industrial welding equipment. It doesn’t mean 100% waterproof, since I make all bags by hand and seam taping can sometimes trap tiny air bubbles.

Upgrade Options
  • External Stretch Pocket

Gives you extra accessible space. Great for phones, snacks, maps, lens caps and more. Made of durable UltraStretch with UHMWPE fibers. Wraps around the full bag.

  • Internal Stretch Pockets

Adds additional accessory stretch pockets on the left and right inside the bag. Pocket width is 3 cm shorter than bag depth.

  • Hook-and-Loop Fabric on All Sides

Allows you to stick hook-and-loop dividers anywhere inside the bag, not just on the large front/back panels.

  • Extra Side Attachment Points

Provides better balance as a shoulder sling camera bag. You could also use these as additional connection options for extra security. They are reinforced with extra fabric from the inside.

  • Internal Security Loop

This adds a small loop to the inside of the hem at the top of the rolltop. You can use this to tie your camera to the bag to catch it in case of a drop.

  • 3D Mesh on Body Side

Adds extra cushioning and breathability on the side of the bag that touches your body. Especially useful if you mainly use a waist belt that pulls the bag close.

Attachment Options

Each bag has two full rows of cord loops for lots of attachment possibilities. Carry your bag clipped to your shoulder straps or hip belt, wear it as a shoulder sling or waist bag, tie it to your bike or figure out your own carrying solution.

  • Carabiners

Each bag comes with two small metal carabiners and you can add additional ones. Use these to clip your bag to your backpack’s daisy chain. Note: not suited for climbing.

  • Hip Belt Loops

Adjustable webbing straps that you can attach to the rows of cord loops. Feed your hip belt through the webbing loops that this creates and cinch them tight, or directly feed the straps through attachment points on your hip belt to additionally secure your bag.

  • Shoulder Strap Links

Carabiner on one end, webbing loop on the other. Feed the webbing through a daisy chain or D-ring on your backpack’s shoulder strap, then pass the carabiner end back through the webbing loop and pull tight – the bag now clips securely to your shoulder strap.

  • Fidlock Waist Belt

Adjustable waist belt with a magnetic Fidlock buckle. You can also use this as a simple shoulder sling strap.

  • Shoulder Sling

A dedicated ultralight sling strap with 4 mm padding to carry the bag on its own, without a backpack.

Safety & Manufacturer
  • Carabiners are not climbing equipment

The included carabiners are accessories for clipping the bag to backpack hardware. They are not climbing equipment, fall-arrest hardware, or rated for any human load. Do not use them to secure people, suspend loads, or in any situation where carabiner failure could cause injury.

  • Small parts – choking hazard

The carabiners, the magnetic buckle on the Fidlock strap, and any other small accessories included with the bag are small enough to be swallowed. Keep them and the bag out of reach of children under 3 years. If a child swallows a part, seek medical help immediately.

  • Magnets and medical devices

The bag contains permanent magnets in the rolltop closure, and on the Fidlock strap in the buckle. If you wear a pacemaker, defibrillator, insulin pump, or another active implantable medical device, keep the magnets at least 15 cm from the device and follow your device manufacturer's guidance.

  • Magnets and sensitive media

Magnets can damage or erase magnetic-stripe cards, mechanical watches, hearing aids, and unshielded hard drives. Keep them clear of the closure area.

  • Magnets and children

Keep away from infants and small children. If a magnet works loose and is swallowed – particularly together with another magnet or metal object – it can cause serious internal injury. Stop using the bag immediately if any magnet becomes detached and contact me for repair.

  • Not a toy or child carrier

This bag is designed for camera and gear transport. It is not a toy, child carrier, or pet carrier, and the straps are not certified for any human load.

  • Strap strangulation hazard

Long sling and waist straps can be a strangulation hazard. Do not place straps around the neck of infants or small children, and store the bag out of their reach when not in use.

  • Not a flotation device

The shell fabric and seams are waterproof, but the bag is not a personal flotation device. Do not rely on it for buoyancy in or on water.

  • Care for continued safe use

Spot-clean with a damp cloth and air-dry. Do not machine wash, tumble dry, iron, or dry-clean – these damage the taped seams and the waterproof film on the Dyneema Composite Fabric. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight; UV light degrades DCF over time. Store dry. Inspect seams, magnets, and carabiners before each use; if you find loose stitching, a detached magnet, or a bent gate on a carabiner, stop using the bag and contact me.

The maker

I personally build your bag.

I'm Jacob – a hiker, photographer, and maker who builds these bags for a living. I like to hike in rainy countries like Scotland or Norway, and I've refined my bags to hold up in their wet conditions over hundreds of kilometers on-trail, plus countless hours at the sewing machine.

I will draft an individual pattern for your bag to make sure it fits your camera perfectly. I will use the fabrics and colors you pick, as well as exactly those features you decide you need for your adventures.

Almost every Roamer I build is slightly different from the last one. That's the part I like most, so I'm very excited to see what you come up with!
