The Ranger is my ultralight take on a camera top-loader, built for hikers and photographers who need full weather protection without carrying extra grams. It holds your mirrorless or DSLR with lens attached, starting at just 57 g for the small version – which is even lighter than popular camera clips!

Protected in any weather.
With 4 mm padding, a roll-top closure, and fully taped seams, the Ranger shields your gear from rain, snow, and grit – so you can focus on the shot, not the forecast.

Ready to shoot in a second.
My magnetic quick-flip lid means no zippers or buckles to slow you down. Just unroll the roll-top once, let the magnet snap in place, and from then on you simply flip the lid to grab your camera.

Carry it your way.
I like mine clipped to my backpack shoulder straps with the two included carabiners. You can also mount it on your hip belt, wear it with a waist belt, strap it to your bike, or try something entirely your own – the two full rows of cord loops give you endless attachment possibilities.

Make it yours.
Need a custom size, tougher fabric, extra padding, or unique features? Select “Custom” and configure your Ranger in six simple steps. Whether you’re wandering forest trails or tackling the mountains, you can dial it in to match your adventures.

FEATURES & DETAILS

I’ve designed my camera bags to be as light as possible (whilst still providing full protection), allowing you to conserve energy and stay focused on capturing the perfect shot.

What this means:

  • Made with high-quality ultralight materials like Challenge Sailcloth’s Ecopak EPLX or the premium ultralight choice of Ultra 100X /200X fabrics, offering an exceptional balance of being extremely light, yet incredibly strong and durable.

  • Equipped with 4 mm padding, my tested sweet spot that provides just the right amount of protection without adding unnecessary weight.

  • I use Dyneema Composite Fabrics as the liner for my camera bags. You might know this fabric from very expensive ultralight backpacking tents and think this is a bit overkill. But it’s incredibly lightweight, waterproof and can be taped!

  • Don’t waste any weight: I’m happy to make you a custom-sized camera bag to perfectly fit your gear!

My camera bags provide strong weather protection, keeping your gear safe from rain, snow and dust.

What this means:

  • The Rolltop Closure is designed for three rolls and thus forms a strong barrier against water entry. This is superior to camera bags with zippers (even if the zip keeps water out, the zipper seams that can’t really be taped let water in).

  • Both the external fabric and internal liner are fully waterproof. To make the best use of this, I’ve designed my camera bags with as few seams as possible. All remaining seams (except for the hem that’s hidden in the rolls) are taped to prevent water sneaking through the stitch holes.

  • Typical camera bags would sew the external fabric and internal liner together to sandwich the padding in-between. I don’t do this, because this makes it impossible to properly tape and seal the camera bag! Instead, I tape my liner to the inside of the shell. This eliminates extra seams and actually improves water protection thanks to my chosen waterproof liner fabric.

  • This makes these bags as waterproof as possible without much heavier fabrics and industrial welding equipment. It doesn’t mean 100 % waterproof, since I make all bags by hand and seam taping can sometimes trap tiny air bubbles. But with two layers of waterproof fabrics and taped seams (liner + shell fabric), it gets as close to perfect as possible.

Note: While the rolltop provides excellent protection against rain, it’s not designed for submersion.

The rolltop is designed to be unrolled once you’re ready to hike or get ready to shoot. Then, my magnetic quick-flip system offers both quick access and sufficient protection on the move.

How does it work?

  • Magnets clip both sides of the rolltop together. When you fold the rolltop down, another magnet holds it securely in place.

  • To access your camera, simply lift and open the folded-down lid in a single movement.

  • The rolltop height is carefully designed not to get in the way, even when the bag sits in front of your chest.

You decide how you carry your camera bag outdoors – thanks to multiple attachment points, two included carabiners and lots of additional attachment options.

  • Use carabiners or shoulder strap connectors to attach to daisy chain on your backpack shoulder straps

  • Use hip-belt connectors to attach to the side of your hip-belt. You can feed your hip-belt through the connectors and cinch them tight, or feed the connectors through attachment points on your hip-belt to additionally secure your bag.

  • A simple shoulder sling or waist belt allows you to carry your camera bag without a backpack. In case of the shoulder sling, I recommend the custom upgrade of extra side attachment points for a more balanced and comfortable carry.

  • I’m currently working on more options like a three point strap, a buckle kit and bike attachments!

My standard camera bag is designed to be ultralight, protective and quickly accessible – full focus on these features, nothing else. But you can configure your custom bag to add options that make it the perfect camera bag for you!

  • The External Stretch Pocket gives you extra accessible space. Great for phones, snacks, maps, lens caps and more. Made of durable UltraStretch material (with UHMWPE fibers).
  • Extra Side Attachment Points provide better balance as a shoulder sling camera bag. You could also use these as additional connection options for extra security. They are reinforced with extra fabric from the inside.
  • An Internal Security Loop is a loop sewn into the inside of the hem. You can use this to tie your camera to the bag to catch it in case of a drop.
  • 3D Mesh on Body Side adds an additional layer of cushioning to the side of the bag that touches your body, as well as some breathability. This may be useful if you mainly intend to use it with a waist belt that pulls the bag close to your body.

Size Small is made for cameras with dimensions up to:

  • 15 cm length
  • 12.5 cm width
  • 8.5 cm height

This will fit most small mirrorless cameras with a standard-range lens attached.

Size Large is made for cameras with dimensions up to:

  • 18 cm length
  • 14 cm width
  • 10 cm height

This will fit most DSLRs or large mirrorless cameras with a lens attached.

You can get a custom-size to perfectly fit your gear. Please enter exact dimensions, I always add a few mm to ensure you can smoothly insert and withdraw your camera.

Note that width indicates width at the top of the bag. It tapers towards the bottom, where width equals height. If your camera body is particularly long, it may make sense to add ~ 5 mm in width to ensure the full body fits nicely.

Note: I have made some construction changes to improve bag strength and waterproofing since weighing all these options, so they will likely weigh 5-10g more.

Choice of Ecopak EPLX 200, Ultra 100 X or X-Pac RX30

EcoPak EPLX 200 is my standard fabric—eco-friendly, lightweight, and durable. Choose X-Pac RX30 if you’d like more beautiful color options (and don’t mind a little extra weight). For the toughest tear and abrasion resistance at the lowest weight, pick Ultra 100X with its extra-strong UHMWPE fibers.

  1. JC

Light and durable as advertised. Worked well.

  2. TH

This bag is awesome!!! Super well made, very durable, shockingly light, great water resistance, and thoughtfully made (I love the daisy chains down the sides!). Only issue I ran into is that it’s a little tough to open when wearing thick gloves (but can be fixed with a little DIY fun). This will most definitely become my go-to camera bag for travel/climbing/outdoor photography!

  4. H

Fantastic piece of gear, Jacob made one large enough to store my medium format bronica s2a and a light meter without an issue. Highly recommend.

  5. A

I like it a lot. Lightweight, and easy to attach to backpack. Perfect for taking the camera out in the forest, for hiking etc. Relatively large bridge camera fits perfectly. The camera is very well protected.
