Your typical ultralight rolltop backpack plus front-access zipper. Store your camera gear in the bottom and reach it quickly from the front instead of digging through all your contents from the top.
Made to order. Lead time: 2 weeks standard – faster on request, just write to me.
Shipping: Germany 2–3 days, EU 3–11 days, international 5–16 days.
The Dawn takes a typical rolltop ultralight backpack and makes it usable for photographers. Your camera sits at the bottom of the pack where it carries best. A zipper runs around the front and flips open like a suitcase, so you reach your camera without digging through everything above it. The C-shaped zip has two pulls, so you can open from any corner to grab something quickly – handy for other items too.
I build the standard Dawn from EPLX400 Black, a waterproof fabric that's sturdy enough so that the backpack keeps its shape, and use minimal hardware to keep it lightweight. All seams are taped (though this bag is not fully waterproof). The shoulder straps carry the weight of your camera comfortably – 8 mm Evazote foam with 3D mesh on top. UltraStretch front pocket, two Ultra 100X side pockets, and one shoulder strap pocket are included. The back panel features breathable 3D mesh with light padding so you don't feel hard items against your back.
All seams are taped, including around the front zipper. The shell is waterproof, but the zipper is only water-resistant – taping around it isn't perfect. The Dawn handles showers, but for full rain protection, use a dry bag for your camera in the bottom and a pack liner above. Access your camera from the front, the rest from the top.
The standard Dawn has no built-in camera padding – that keeps it light and usable for many different types of adventures. But you can either order a custom-size to perfectly fit around your existing camera cube, or add 4–8 mm internal camera padding. Compression straps with buckles secure a tripod. Attachment loops run along all four vertical seams and both shoulder straps, ready for extra gear or another of my camera bags.
The full bag can be customized. Pick your favorite fabrics and colors, resize the pack, or add custom features. Can't find what you're looking for? Contact me and I'll see what I can do.

First I thought I would like to have a simple hipbelt, but the wide and well padded shoulder straps are so comfortable that maybe there is no need for a hipbelt.”

The Dawn fits ~22 L inside, plus ~4 L exterior pocket volume.
VolumeBody: 23 × 14 × 43 cm = ~14 L
Bump: ~2 L
Total: 14 + 2 = 16 L
Volume23 × 14 × 19 cm = ~6 L
Volume~4 L
Total= 22–26 L
Custom sizing is available – mainly recommended if you want to perfectly fit an existing internal camera unit. Note that a custom size only changes the dimensions, not the construction. This backpack has no hip belt, so sizing it up to carry 30 L of camera gear won’t carry comfortably. Future larger versions will.
Since the carrying system is pretty simple with only shoulder straps, the fit is pretty universal like any other daypack. The back panel is 43 cm long and the shoulder straps are 48 cm long. This ensures they nicely wrap around your shoulder and the bag still offers attachment points low enough so you can comfortably attach one of my other camera bags. You may change the shoulder strap length for a better personal fit.
| Fabric | Weight |
|---|---|
| Ultra 200X | 410 g |
| X-Pac RX30 | 470 g |
| X-Pac RX30, +4 mm padding, + front zip pocket, + laptop side zip, Ultra 100 X side pockets, + bottom pocket | 575 g |
| X-Pac X11, +4 mm padding, + front zip pocket, + laptop side zip, stretch side pockets, + bottom pocket | 685 g |
Approximate weight. Ultra 200X and X-Pac RX30 prototypes have ranged from 400 to 500 g. Each custom option impacts the final weight.
Standard choice is Ultra 200X. You may change this to X-Pac RX30 (adds a color range at a weight increase), or Ultra 100X or Ultra 400X. Other fabrics available on request (e.g. X-Pac UX10, X-Pac X11).
Standard choices are UltraStretch for the front pocket, optional bottom pocket, and shoulder strap pocket(s), and Ultra 100X for the side pockets. You may change side pocket fabric to any body fabric or UltraStretch. UltraStretch pockets fit tighter.
Breathable 3D mesh provides light padding against hard internal items.
If you opt for a padded bag, I use Evazote EV50 closed-cell foam (4 or 8 mm). Seams remain taped even with padding added.
The rolltop extends 29 cm above the core body and requires 10 cm to securely close with three rolls. Magnets in the hem snap together at the top to hold the rolltop closed when you’re busy at camp. This backpack is not designed for submersion.
All seams are taped, including around the front zipper. The shell fabric is waterproof. However, the front zipper is only water-resistant and taping around the zipper isn’t perfect, so some will find its way through under sustained rain.
The Dawn handles showers. For full rain protection, use a dry bag for your camera in the bottom compartment and a pack liner for everything above. Access your camera from the front zipper, the rest from the top. If you opt for padding, I construct the bag so all seams remain taped.
Add a second shoulder strap pocket (one is included as standard). UltraStretch, e.g. for water bottle or phone.
An UltraStretch pocket on the bottom of the pack. Black.
Add 4 or 8 mm Evazote EV50 closed-cell foam padding. Seams remain taped.
Resize the pack to fit your gear – mainly useful for fitting an existing internal camera unit.
Add a side zipper for laptop access.
Standard straps are 48 cm long. Adjust this for a personal fit. You might want to copy the length from a backpack you really like.
The compression strap buckles, the magnets in the rolltop hem, and any other small accessories included with the backpack are small enough to be swallowed. Keep them and the bag out of reach of children under 3 years. If a child swallows a part, seek medical help immediately.
The backpack contains permanent magnets in the rolltop closure hem. If you wear a pacemaker, defibrillator, insulin pump, or another active implantable medical device, keep the magnets at least 15 cm from the device and follow your device manufacturer's guidance.
Magnets can damage or erase magnetic-stripe cards, mechanical watches, hearing aids, and unshielded hard drives. Keep them clear of the closure area.
Keep away from infants and small children. If a magnet works loose and is swallowed – particularly together with another magnet or metal object – it can cause serious internal injury. Stop using the bag immediately if any magnet becomes detached and contact me for repair.
This backpack is designed for camera and gear transport. It is not a toy, child carrier, or pet carrier, and the straps are not certified for any human load.
Long shoulder straps and compression straps can be a strangulation hazard. Do not place straps around the neck of infants or small children, and store the bag out of their reach when not in use.
The shell fabric and seams are waterproof, but the backpack is not a personal flotation device. Do not rely on it for buoyancy in or on water.
Spot-clean with a damp cloth and air-dry. Do not machine wash, tumble dry, iron, or dry-clean – these damage the taped seams. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight; UV light degrades the fabrics over time. Store dry. Inspect seams, magnets, buckles, and zipper before each use; if you find loose stitching, a detached magnet, a damaged buckle, or a broken zipper, stop using the bag and contact me.

The Dawn comes with a 22 L rolltop body, two compression straps, an UltraStretch front pocket, two side pockets, and one shoulder strap pocket as standard – that's the bag. Everything below is the part you customize: body fabric and colors, pocket fabrics and colors, and custom extras.
Pick between X-Pac RX30 (widest color range) or my premium ultralight fabrics Ultra 100X and Ultra 200X.
Pick from the body fabrics or UltraStretch for each pocket – front, sides, and optional bottom.
Add a second shoulder strap pocket, laptop side zip, camera padding, or configure a custom size to fit your gear.
I'm Jacob – a hiker, photographer, and maker who builds these bags for a living. I like to hike in rainy countries like Scotland or Norway, and I've refined my bags to hold up in their wet conditions over hundreds of kilometers on-trail, plus countless hours at the sewing machine.
I will draft an individual pattern for your bag to make sure it fits your camera perfectly. I will use the fabrics and colors you pick, as well as exactly those features you decide you need for your adventures.
Almost every Dawn 22L I build is slightly different from the last one. That's the part I like most, so I'm very excited to see what you come up with!
Configure your Dawn 22L – size, fabric, color, padding, extras, attachment. I'll build it for your camera and ship in two weeks.
